Joan
Tässä on laukku, jonka tein ystävälleni (myöhästyneeksi) syntymäpäivälahjaksi. Hän pitää ruusuista ja vaaleanpunaisesta, joten kun löysin ruusukuvioiset puuvillaverhot, ajattelin voivani tehdä niistä jotain hänen makuunsa sopivaa. Ajelehdin kahden eri ompeluidean välillä, kunnes löysin marketista Novitan kahvat (www.novita.fi ei valitettavasti myy juuri näitä).
Laukun vuori on vanhan roosan väristä satiinia. Sisällä on pieni tasku samaisista ruusuverhoista. Ostin molemmat kankaat käytettyinä kierrätyskeskuksesta. Aiemmista töistä ylijäänyttä vakosamettia käytin välikankaana, jotta laukku pitäisi muotonsa paremmin. Se täytti tehtävänsä melko mainiosti, mutta kokeilen silti ensi kerralla jotain muuta. Vakosametti teki laukusta vähän liian paksun ommeltavaksi.
Laukun nimeksi tuli Joan erään laulajattaren mukaan, josta ystäväni myös sattuu pitämään.
Here’s a bag I made for my friend for a (little late) birthday present. She likes roses and pink so I when I found rose patterned cotton curtains I thought I could use them for something that would suit her taste. For some time I drifted between two ideas of what to sew. Then I found the bag handles. They’re made by a Finnish textile brand Novita (www.novita.fi, unfortunately they don’t have these exact handles in the web shop).
The lining is old rose coloured satin (’old’ referring to the shade of rose, not the age of the satin) and there’s a little pocket inside the bag that’s also made from the rose patterned curtains. Both the satin and the curtains were bought second hand from the reuse center. I used some left-over cotton corduroy in between them to make the bag’s structure stronger. It did the trick but I’m still going to try something else next time; the corduroy made the whole thing a little too thick to sew.
I named the bag Joan according to a singer my friend also happens to like.

Taas korvakoruja / More earrings
Tein joutessani kaksi paria korvakoruja. Nämä ovat malliltaan yksinkertaiset; kun materiaalit ovat kasassa, käy työskentely jotuisasti. Pitäisi vain käydä ostoksilla hankkimassa se aiemmin mainittu salpalukko sekä pieni lajitelma helmiä, ehkä lasisia…
I made two pairs of earrings. They’re quite simple; once you’ve got everything you need you’ll make them in no time. I just should do some shopping: I need that toggle I mentioned some time ago and a small package of mixed pearls. Glass pearls could be nice…
Tarvikkeet:
– kaksi korupiikkiä
– neljä helmeä
– koukut
What you need:
– two pins
– four beads
– earring findings
Lisäksi tarvitset pihtejä: 1) sivuleikkurit leikkaamiseen, 2) pyörökärkipihdit silmukoiden tekemiseen ja 3) lattakärkipihdit kaikkeen muuhun.
You’ll also need a set of pliers: 1) cutters for cutting (surprise indeed), 2) round nose pliers for making loops and 3) flat nose pliers for everything else.
Korutarvikeliikkeet myyvät toki pihtejä, mutta halvemmalla saatat saada rautakaupasta. Muista vain ostaa mahdollisimman pienet – kömpelöillä pihdeillä tulee rumaa jälkeä, vaikka niitä käyttelevät sormet olisivat kuinka näppärät tahansa. Pyörökärkipihtini voisivat itse asiassa olla aavistuksen ohuemmat.
Kannattaa valita sileäpintaiset pihdit, sillä urapintaisista jää ikävät jäljet. Huomioi myös, että leikatessasi käytät useimmiten sivuleikkureiden terävää kärkeä. Yhdistelmäpihdit kannattaa siis unohtaa.
Crafting shops sell these of course but you’ll probably find them cheaper at your local hardware store. Just remember to buy as tiny ones as possible – clumsy pliers make the result look clumsy as well, no matter how nimble your fingers are. My round nose pliers could actually be a bit thinner.
Make sure that the pliers are smooth as textured surface will leave it’s mark. Also note that when you’re cutting you’ll most often use the tip of your cutters. Combination pliers just won’t work here.

Silmukan taivuttaminen on korvakorun vaikein osa, ja senkin oppii helposti. Jos et kuitenkaan halua käyttää suosimaani yritys ja erehdys -mentelmää, katso tämä video.
How to do the earrings:
put the beads onto a pin
fold the pin into a curve just on top of the beads
put the finding onto the pin
fold the curve into a small loop, trim the excess wire
adjust the findings in needed so that they fit your ears
Folding the loop is the trickiest part here and even that can be easily learned. However if you don’t wand to do it through try and error (I’m a fan of that method), take a look at this video.
Smoothie
Ohje on kahdelle hengelle ja viitteellinen, yrittäkää kestää.
Sekoita yhteensä 4 dl marjoja ja hedelmiä seuraavasti:
- omena kuorittuna ja paloiksi pilkottuna
- loppuosa jäisiä marjoja, joista 1/3 puolukoita ja 2/3 mansikoita
Soseuta sauvasekoittimella.
Lisää 6 dl vaniljajogurttia tai maustamatonta jogurttia tai molempia, lisäksi sokeria maun mukaan. Sekoita hyvin ja nauti.
The recipe servers two and is not too precise, please bear with me.
Mix 4 dl fresh fruit and frozen berries together as follows:
- an apple (peeled and chopped)
- the rest is berries: 1/3 lingonberries and 2/3 strawberries
Process into purée with a blender.
Add 6 dl vanilla yoghurt or natural yoghurt or a mix of both. Add sugar according to taste, mix well together and enjoy.
Helmeilyä / Beading
Kyllästyttyäni erään toisen kirjakerhon romaanitarjontaan päätin joulun alla liittyä Unelmakerhoon (http://www.unelmakerho.fi/). Tutustumispaketissa oli korukirja, huovutuskirja, muistikirja sekä ompelu- ja neuleohjeita sisältävä kirjanen. Kokeilin eilen helmitöitä, alla kuvia lopputuotoksista. Ensikertalaisena opin, että pihdeillä kannattaa puristaa vain koruvaijeria; lukot eivät sitä kestä. Sulkiessani kiinnityshelmeä toisen salpalukon salpa jäi pihtien väliin ja murtui. Rannekorun tekeminen saa siis odottaa siihen asti, että hankin uuden salvan.
After getting bored with a book club that only offers me novels I decided to join a Finnish hobby book club (link above if you’re interested). My introductory offer package included a notebook and three books about beading, felting, sewing and knitting. I tried beading yesterday, see pictures below. Click for larger images.
As a first timer I learned that pliers are meant for the beading wire, not for locks of toggles. I was closing a crimp bead when a toggle bar got in between of my pliers and broke. I can’t make a bracelet without a proper toggle so that little project must wait until I’ll have time to visit a craft supply shop.
Necklace and earrings
Koruvaijeri pitää hyvin muotonsa. The beading wire holds it form quite nicely.
Wearing
Salpalukko on sen verran sievä, ettei haittaa vaikka se näkyisikin. I think the toggle is pretty so I don’t mind if it shows.
Decoupage
Tänä syksynä opettelin servettitekniikkaa. Helppo hallita ja jälki näyttää hyvältä. Tekniikka yleistyi Euroopassa 1700-luvulla, kun haluttiin saada edullisia käsin maalatun näköisiä huonekaluja. En kuitenkaan yrittänyt uusia ensimmäisenä keittiön pöytää, vaan lähdin liikkeelle korurasiasta.
This autumn I learned to decoupage. It’s easy and the result looks good. The technique became popular in Europe in the 16th century when people wanted to have hand painted furniture at a reasonable price. Nevertheless I started with a jewelry box instead of our kitchen table.
